Communicating With Dad, Part 8 – Best Times to Contact Dad

At Regis, some times of the day are busier than others. These mainly include (but are not limited to) mornings, lunchtime, and dinner and bedtime. During these times, staff have little time to help Dad with minor tasks such as using/answering his phone. And if Dad cannot get help with his phone in a timely manner, there is a high chance you will have difficulty contacting him.

Here is a list of times to avoid calling him and why. Times may vary slightly from day to day, depending on staff levels, issues with residents, etc.

6:30 AM – 7:30 AM (approx) – Most residents, including Dad, are woken up and showered. After his shower, Dad sometimes chooses to sit in his wheelchair. However, this is usually not within reaching distance of his phone, and staff don’t always remember to move it closer to him.

8:00 AM – 9:00 AM (approx) – Most residents, including Dad, are served/fed breakfast. Sometimes, this is in Dad’s room (where he or the person feeding him can answer the phone), other times in the main dining room (without his phone). In any case, calling during breakfast time is not good etiquette.

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM (Approx) – Most residents, including Dad, are served/fed lunch. Sometimes, this is in Dad’s room (where he or the person feeding him can answer the phone), other times in the main dining room (without his phone). Dad often requires a 30+ min nap afterwards.

5:00 PM + (approx) – Most residents, including Dad, are served/fed dinner and dessert. Sometimes, this is in Dad’s room (where he or the person feeding him can answer the phone), other times in the main dining room (without his phone). Shortly after dinner, most residents, including Dad, are prepared and then put to bed. Sometimes, Dad watches TV for a while longer; other times, he goes straight to sleep.
